Between 1802, when President Thomas Jefferson founded West Point, demerits were a common problem for many West Point Students. From 1802 until 1829, only Robert E. Lee never received a demerit. Demerits were handed out at West Point by the administrators for any number of offenses. These ranged from not cleaning their rifles to being late for chapel on Sundays. Lee was a perfect student and graduated second in his class of 1829.

As an aside, cadet Joseph Johnston was a classmate of Lee. Later, of course, Lee would command Johnston and many other West Point graduates in the US Civil War.
