He was a British corporal who fought in World War one. He was born in January 1898, and died in 1984. He was a Machine gunner during World War One, and was a taxidermist before the war. After lying about his age and joining the army in 1914 he was sent to France in 1915 and was almost continuiously on the front lines from 1916-17. But, he did take some time off when he was accidentally shot by another British soldier in October 1916. He fought in the battles of the Somme, Loos, Cambrai, and Arras. He was severly wounded in October 1917 when a vital artery was severed. He nearly died. He was Honourably discharged in 1919, and was unemployed for a while, and worked at Golf courses and whatnot until 1946, when he went to work at the Ministry of National Insurance until 1962. He published his own book in 1969 named "With a Machine Gun to Cambrai", which was a success.
The first day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916, is widely regarded as a catastrophic failure for the British forces, resulting in heavy casualties. Document A, the Daily Express, likely highlights the initial optimism and intentions of the British command, while Document B, George Coppard's account, may detail the grim reality faced by soldiers on the ground. Document C, Otto Lais, might provide a perspective on the German defense, indicating that they successfully repelled the British advances. Overall, evidence from these documents suggests that the Germans achieved a tactical victory that day.
