Australia's first farmer was convict James Ruse.

Ruse was transported to Australia in the First Fleet, aboard the ship 'Scarborough'. Ruse, who was from Cornwall and had a farming background, was selected by Governor Phillip to try his hand at farming in the unfamiliar country of Australia. He was sent to Rose Hill, now known as Parramatta, in November 1788, to establish a farm on a grant of land he was given. He was successful, and was awarded more lahis as a reward.
