AnswerHenry VIII he ordered his death. AnswerKing Henry II, who was very ill, heard some bad news about problems with Becket, and called out something like, "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" Four of his knights took this to mean that he was ordering the death of Becket, rode off, and killed Becket while he was praying in Canterbury Cathedral. Henry II was punished by the pope and had to do penance, but it was not very onerous. The four knights did not get off so easily.
