Major General George Pickett is most often named but he commanded only one of the three divisions involved. Brigadier General James Johnston Pettigrew commanded one of the divisions but is spared mention by historians because he died on 17 July during the Confederate retreat to Virginia. Major General Issac Ridgeway Trimble was the other commander and he managed to live to the ripe old age of 85 without sharing in the responsibility because his division was in trail to Pettigrew.
Pickett is most often named because his troops almostmade the breakthrough at the angle. In tuth all three divisions were under the command of Lieutenant General James Longstreet who had forseen and predicted the disaster. General Robert E. Lee had created the plan and issued the order. His subordinates only carried it out.
