The first box of chocolates is lost to the mists of time and history. It is highly unlikely that anyone knows for certain.

What we do know is that chocolate is a New World (western hemisphere) origin food. The natives of North and Central America enjoyed chocolate for centuries before Spanish conquerors ever arrived here. The Conquistadores took it home with them, and it became en vogue there very quickly. It took several years of drinking bitter chocolate before Spanish couturiers began adding sugar and honey to counteract the bitterness. Before it was introduce to Spanish Royalty, however, chocolate had little to no following at all. That first box may have been a gift from some long lost Spanish prince to a princess from another kingdom.

Likely as not, we will never know.
