The first truly "American" flag was made before we became the United States of America. This flag known as the Continental Colors or ("Grand Union" flag) was first raised on January 1, 1776 on Prospect Hill in Boston. It has 13 alternating red and white stripes with the British Union Jack (King's Colors) in the upper left corner of the flag. It began as the British Red Ensign used by the British Navy since 1674 when it in 1707 became the flag of the English American Colonies under Queen Anne of England. From 1707 it was known as the Colonial Red Ensign or Queen Anne's Colors. After years of conflict with the British Parliament over taxation and quartering of troops in private homes with no vote in the decisions being made many Colonial residents were concerned about their future. As a first step toward a national identity someone sewed six white stripes on the Colonial Red Ensign making what many call the first American flag - the Grand Union flag.
The first "Stars and Stripes" American flag was made shortly after the Continental Congressional Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777. It was most likely designed by Francis Hopkinson. Who actually stitched this first flag is unknown. But, an upholsterer and seamstress named Betsy Ross of Philadelphia most likely made a number of US flags.
