Who put down john brown's raid?

Most likely he was inflluenced by:

1 -the insurrectionary ideas expressed of Count Charles Bianco of Saint-Jorioz, who in 1830s had published in Europa a treatise focused on the war of insurrection carried on by guerrilla warfare and,

2 - Giuseppe Mazzini, who in 1832 had published a Handbook of Italian Revolutionary and, in 1848, an article on the issue of slavery in the United States in the magazine "The Bell of Liberty".

Although there is no evidence that John Brown had ever read these works, it is worth pointing out that the same enjoyed a great popularity in the radical anti-slavery circles in New York and therefore could have been a source of inspiration for Brown, who was allegedly keeping on good terms with them.

As statement of fact, both Saint-Jorioz and Mazzini theorized a guerrilla warfare carried on by little groups of fighters standing on and moving from the mountains and Brown, after visiting Europe in 1849, declared to his friend Richard Raelf some years later that:

"He had visited all the fortifications and field works he was able to find and approach, and he would apply all the information acquired on the conduct of (a future) guerrilla warfare in the United States.
