Immediately after the fall of the Roman Empire, Florence was conquered by the Ostrogoths. The area was disputed between the Ostrogoths and the Byzantine Empire for a while, but was then conquered by Lombards, in 568. It was ruled by a series of Lombard kings, until it was the conquered by Charlemagne in 774. It was part of the Carolingian Empire, and then part of the Holy Roman Empire. The government of Florence became republican in 1115. This government was dominated by guild members. Later in the Middle Ages, mercantile families, including the Albizzi and Medici families, asserted political control of Florence to a great degree.
