The first machine gun developed during the Industrial Revolution was the Gatling gun, invented by Dr. Richard Gatling in 1861. This early firearm used a series of rotating barrels to fire multiple rounds in rapid succession, significantly increasing firepower compared to traditional single-shot weapons. The Gatling gun was initially used during the American Civil War and laid the groundwork for the development of more advanced automatic weapons in the years to come.
The aircraft mounted machine gun was at first simply a ground machine mounted for a gunner to fire. All sides in WW1 used it. The first successful machine gun fired by a pilot was the Lewis machine gun on a special mounting attached to the top wing, allowing the gun to fire over the propellor.

The primary reason for the death and destruction of the war was the Industrial Revolution. advances in technology led to the creation of new weapons, such as the machine gun, poison gas, tanks, and airplanes. Even though new weapons were created, military strategists had not prepared for their impact on battle plans. The combination of old battle tactics and new weapons led to trench warfare and stalemate.
The "German war machine" refers to the industrial complex underlying Germany's successful World War II military campaigns and strategies, e.g. Blitzkrieg.
Well, the old style of infantry warfare, line and column (standing in the open and shooting) did not make sense after the invention of the machine gun. It seemed the Industrial Revolution had finally caught up with military technology. So the first tactical response to the maching gun was the same as the response to the first cannon, earthenwork fortifications or trenches.
While some would say the Gatling gun was the first,I consider the Maxim machine gun the first true full auto machine gun.
The first true machine gun was invented by Hiram Maxim in the United Kingdom.
