Actually the full name is Mac Giolla Phadraig, meaning son of a servant of Patrick. It is the original clan name of the clan which is now most commonly called Fitzpatrick (although there are variations like Kilpatrick and Gilpatrick). The name was changed at the time of Henry VIII when the head of the Mac Giolla Phadraig clan was trying to curry favor with Henry in an effort to regain some of his land. The Fitzpatrick name is the only one of the Irish "Fitz" names which is NOT Anglo-Norman but rather an Irishman attempting to gain favor with his British master. Emma L. Fitzpatrick
