Marie-Therese of Austria. Louis XIV had 2 wives--one was a queen and the other was a morgantic wife--married but not equal in rank as she was not royalty. His first wife was Marie Therese of Austria and his second was Madame de Maintenon, Frances Aubigne Marie-Therese of Austria was Infanta(Princess) of Spain and a Habsburg. She married Louis XIV as part of a peace treaty with Spain. She was very inbred and was possibly developmentally delayed(her brother Charles II of Spain was retarded and deformed). She was Louis' double first cousin. She is the queen who supposedly originally said "let them eat cake". Madame Maintenon was the widow of a poor poet and she was minor nobility but she was the governess of the King's illegitmate children and he grew to love her and he married her after the death of the queen. Madame Maintenon was not crowned because she had no royal blood but she was made a Marquise and she ruled over the court as if she was a crowned queen.
