The only person that comes to my mind is Frederick Douglass. I think i spelt his name wrong, but he was a slave and then he ran to the north became free and wrote a book about his child hood on slavery as well as fought for the abolition of slavery.

You may also be talking about Olaudah Equiano. He was a slave that wrote a book called The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. He was bought by a British Naval Officer, Captain Pascal. After 10 years of enslavement he bought his freedom. Just type his name in google and you will find all sorts about him.

The person who comes immediately to my mind is George Washington Carver, born in the 1860s (before Abolition) in what is now Diamond, Missouri. In the US, the George Washington Carver Recognition Day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, January 5.

His story is truly amazing. His research into farming alternatives to cotton - particularly peanuts and sweet potatoes - as well as his achievements in improving race relations, made him world-famous. His many accomplishments and human qualities are too numerous to detail here; the link below is an excellent place to start, and contains many good references.
