Brigadier General Lewis Addison Armistead was a brigade-level commander in Pickett's Division, Longstreet's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, Robert E. Lee commanding. The two met while serving in San Diego, California. In 1861, Virginia seceded from the union, and Lewis answered the call to defend Virginia (his home). Hancock answered the call to arms as well, fighting for the Union Army. The two best friends found themselves on opposite sides of the same battle, when Armistead led his brigade of Virginia troops across the fields of Gettysburg in what was known as Pickett's Charge. Armistead had been shot in the arm and the leg, and died two days later in a Union Army field hospital that was set up at Spangler's Farm. He is buried in the family plot in Old Saint Paul's Cemetery in Baltimore, along with his uncle George Armistead, the commander of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 (the fort was under siege, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner).

Did General Lo Armistead go over and meet with General Hancock prior to the start of the Battle of Gettysburg?

No. General Lewis Armistead and General Hancock both knew each other from fighting together in the union army back before the battle of Gettysburg. General Lewis Armistead fought with the Confederate Army, Under General James Longstreet. Lo Armistead was also involved in the valiant charge against the union center, a move known as "Pickett's Charge." General Hancock was a newly appointed corps commander at the battle of Gettysburg. When Hancock's friend, Maj. General John Reynolds was killed, Hancock was appointed to command Reynolds remaining forces. On July 3rd, 1863, Pickett's Charge commenced. When Armistead reached the center of the union army, he was struck by a union bullet and died two days later. Armistead never got to see his old friend because just beforehand, General Hancock was struck by a Confederate bullet and carried away. Hancock survived his wounds, but never saw his old war friend. Armistead, on his death, left Almira Hancock (Hancock's Wife) a copy of his personal bible. Two friend, fighting against each other, but never to see one another again. Sad.
