Francis Marion, a.k.a: The Swamp Fox, considered to be one of the fathers of modern guerrilla warfare, is credited in the lineage of the United States Army Rangers. His persistent irregular methods were used to great effect against the British occupation of South Carolina from 1780-1781.
Marion's Men supplied their own food, weapons, ammunition, horses, and served without pay, obtaining (capturing) supplies as needed from the Brits. The battle of Black Mingo Creek further gained him many followers.
