Second Lieutenant Samuel Junkin, 308th Fighter Squadron earned distinction as the first active-duty American pilot to shoot down a German aircraft over Europe on August 19, 1942. http://www.aviano.af.mil/Subfolders/World%20War%20II-new.htm Nice information, but wrong. I don't have a individual pilot's name but I can say for sure that a group of 80 American citizens, who went to Great Britain on their own, and volunteered to become RAF pilots, were flying Spitfires and Hurricanes in 1940, during the Battle of Britain. They were members of the two RAF Eagle Squadrons. So would you like to split hairs, about what air force they were a member of??? Or would you agree that they were AMERICANS and were shooting down German air craft, over England, in 1940, not 1942?
He shot down a number of enemy aircraft during the first world war.
The war stopped the German attempt to take over all of Europe. That certainly seems like a benefit to society. The war also forced the improvement of aircraft which still continues to improve. During WW1 aircraft were first used to spy on the enemy, then the enemy put guns on the aircraft to shoot down the spy plane so aircraft continued to improve both in power and reliability. Before the war, airplanes had been just a novelty, more of a hobby.
World's first clash of aircraft carriers.
The Italian-Turkish war of 1911 saw the first use of aircraft to observe the enemy and drop bombs. Nov. 1, 1911 Italian pilot Liutenant Giulio Gavotti threw 4 gernades over the side of his Taube airplane, just outside of Tripoli, Libya. No one was injured. It is commonly believed WW1 saw the first use of aircraft for bombing and recon. Most major militaries were exploring the possibility of using airplanes in these roles before WW1.
Histories first sea battle between aircraft carriers.

The first commercial airline to use the 747 was Pan American World Airways.

An American aerospace firm, Lockhead Corporation, an American research and development firm Northrop Corporation, invented it. The first generation of radar-invisible aircraft, stealth planes were designed to elude enemy radar systems.
cookies 'n' cream!
That was 'observing' the enemy in WW1, seeing where his major troop concentrations and artillery were.
First used to gather information on locations of enemy forces, and to direct artillery fire, aircraft were later used to drop bombs, and to strafe (shoot with machine guns) enemy soldiers and vehicles.
The first microwaves were used during World War II for radar technology, in order to detect enemy aircraft. After the war, they were adapted into microwave ovens for cooking food in a more efficient and rapid manner.
The first barrage balloon was built by British engineer Sir Barnes Wallis in 1912. It was designed to defend against aircraft attacks during World War I by creating obstacles in the sky for enemy planes.
in ww1 pilots took pictures of enemy position and carried a pistol in there pocket but the first mounted weapon on an aircraft was i think a 7.5mm machie gun. it could have been 6.5... anyway it was a machine gun.
