The Nile river was the lifeblood of the Egyptian people. It is no wonder that Anuket, the goddess of the river, was also the goddess of life and fertility. Anuket was represented by by a woman with a gazelle's head. She was daughter of Satet, the goddess of the flood. Her temple was located on the island of Seheil.

However, Hapi was also a diety who was embodied by the Nile. He was attributed to the annual flooding of the Nile and viewed as a god bearing the gifts of fertility and blessings of the river.

Sobek was also the Crocodile god of the Nile. While originally Sobek was a diety of the "evil" crocodiles, which the primitive Egyptians were very afraid, he eventually also became a god of the armies due to his ferocity. This ambiguity led him to become a god who would repair the evils of the world.
