There is an argument for Paul Robeson (1898-1976), who, in addition to his resume as a stage and film actor, was a scholar, College Football star, classical singer and civil rights activist. Among his motion pictures were "The Emperor Jones" (1933), "Show Boat" (1936), "Song of Freedom" (1936), "King Solomon's Mines" (1937) and "Tales of Manhattan" (1942). He might have had a long and stellar career as an actor, but his strong political views ran afoul of anti-Communist congressmen in the 1940s and 1950s, resulting in his being blacklisted.
