The Parthian Empire. They ruled the area of current day Baghdad from 190 BC to 220 AD. They created a battery consisting of a pot with a metal rod through the middle. When the pot was filled with an acidic liquid (i.e. vinegar) the pots would produce 1.5-2V, the equivalent of an AA or AAA battery. The pots were large and hard to move around, so they were discarded later for other types of batteries.
