During the years before the reunification, Helmut Kohl was the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of [West] Germany, while Erich Honecker (General Secretary and Chairman of the Council of State) ruled the East. During the period of separate government, each country had a succession of leaders; these men were in charge until the Eastern government collapsed in 1989.

East Germany had a couple of interim leaders after Honecker who ruled (more or less) for very short periods, but the last real ruler was Honecker.
