The Prime Minister of Great Britain during all but the first eight months of World War II was Sir Winston Churchill, who succeeded Neville Chamberlain when he (Churchill) took office on May 10, 1940. He inspired his countrymen through the Battle of Britain (July through October, 1940), and on through to the end of the war. He was also Time magazine's "Man of the Half Century" in 1950.
