The Missouri Compromise's latitudinal division of the United States had become a barrier to the spirit of Manifest Destiny due to sectional hostilities. Texas, tried to get annexed for nine years, but had failed due to it allowing slaves in the state. With new western territories opening up, southerners in particular believed the compromise was holding back their vision of Manifest Destiny.

They didn't like it, because it banned slavery North of a certain line. But at least it was a clear 'line in the sand'. Both sides disliked it equally. Oddly enough, this kept the balance, and it kept the peace for thirty years.
Chief Justice Roger Taney declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, declaring Congress had overstepped its authority in forging agreements that would be binding on future states. Taney said Congress could make anti-slavery laws for US Territories, but the states had the sovereign authority to decide whether to allow slavery within their borders. He wrote the opinion in that 7-2 decision. He further stated that the "once free, always free" doctrine that allowed slaves living in free states to be emancipated permanently violated the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment by depriving the slave owners of their property without due process or compensation. In the Dred Scott decision a slave was taken up north to a "free state," according to the Missouri Compromise, and then brought back down to a slave state. Dred Scott felt that by entering a free state should be free from slavery, but on the ruling the Dred Scott decision ruled that slaves are considered property and can be taken anywhere therefore nullifying the Missouri Compromise.
In 1820 the tension was high as the union decided weather or not they should admitt new state in. The states were disagreeing about the slavery or antislavery environment would be in Missiouri if it was admitted into the union. While Congress considered the Missiouri question Maine applied for statehood broadening the discussion to Maine and Missiouri. Henry clay stepped in and made a comprimise to keep the balance between the north and south. In March 1820 the Missiouri Comprimise was reached, admitting Missiouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. The remainder of the Louisiana Teriotory north of the 36degree 30'N parallel banned slavery.
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was a compromise between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in Congress agreeing to prohibit slavery in states north of the parallel 36°30' north except in the state of Missouri. Additionally, the state of Maine was allowed to join the Union as a free state. This compromise was passed due to concerns of the creation of the state of Missouri destroying the delicate balance between slave states and free states in Congress.

They gained Missouri as a slave holding state as well as the land below the 36°30' parallel known as the Arkansas Territory. They lost the chance to admit more slave holding states besides what they owned in the small territory due to the Missouri Compromise Line.
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 admitted Maine as a "free" state and Missouri as a "slave" state. As part of the deal, slavery will be, from then on, prohibited north of parallel 36°30', with the exception of the state of Missouri which was located north of that parallel.Section 14 of the Constitution states that all citizens of the United States are subject to the jurisdiction of the country. Therefore, no other state may enforce a law that may limit the privileges provided by the being a citizen of the country. The compromise is clearly making a difference between the privileges of citizens of the country according to the place they live.Section 32 of the Constitution states that no person is entitled to a different set of emoluments (or payments he receives for the work he or she does) than those from the community he lives. The Missouri compromise also goes against this enactment due to the fact that slaves are clearly getting separate forms of payment.
The biggest problem was that Missouri wanted to be admitted as a slave state, upsetting the "balance of power" between free and slave states. The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state to maintain the balance, and also specified that no new slave states would be admitted north of the southern border of (most of) Missouri ... the southeastern corner of Missouri dips down into the "slave state" region. As you might expect if you knew anything about the politics of the time, this new rule lasted almost long enough for the ink to dry before people started contesting it.
The state that is due south of Iowa is Missouri! :)

The most southern state Iowa borders is Missouri. However, Missouri is a Midwestern state and not a Southern one.
Maine became part of the Union due to the Missouri Compromise between the South and the North. Maine was the 23rd state to join the Union.
