Tonatiuh was a sun god throughout central Mexico of the present age we live in, (there were 5 altogether), he started out as a Toltec god and was later adopted into both Maya and Aztec mythologies. According to the Aztecs, Tonatiuh started out as Nanautzin, a god of no importance, and through good luck acquired the position of god of the sun of the current age. Tonatiuh was responsible for the sun moving through the sky, and the Aztecs sacrificed countless humans to keep this happening.
