Leland Stanford was an American tycoon and politician. He moved to the San Francisco area in the 1850's during the California Gold Rush. He was a major investor in the Central Pacific Railroad, and eventually became the railroad's president. In 1861, he became California's 8th governor. He and his wife founded Stanford University as a memorial to their son, who had passed away during a trip in Europe.

Levi Strauss was a German Jewish immigrant to the United States. Like Stanford, he moved to San Francisco during the California Gold Rush. His company Levi Strauss & Co. was the first business that made and sold denim blue jeans.
