Orson Pratt and Erastus Snow were the lead elements of the advance party to scout out the valley and find the Donner trail. They arrived in the Salt Lake valley July 21, 1847, a full three days ahead of Brigham Young and the main body of Saints.
Brigham Young lead the first group of Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley after the death of Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith had prophesied that the Church would one day move to the Rocky Mountains.
The Mormon Trail ended in Salt Lake City, Utah. Originally, there was nothing at the end but an empty desert valley and a really stinky salty lake, but the pioneers began building a city, so that by the time people stopped traveling the Mormon trail (due to the railroad coming), there was a big thriving city at the end of thet trail.
Pioneer Day is a celebration of the arrival of the early pioneers in the Salt Lake valley in Utah. That was on July 24, 1847. Some people think that it is a celebration of Utah gaining statehood, but that wasn't until January 4, 1896, and Pioneer Day was celebrated much earlier.
Utah celebrates U.S. Independence Day on July 4th and Pioneer Day on July 24th. (The Mormon Pioneers first arrived in what is now Salt Lake City on July 24th, 1847.)

There was a huge locust infestation. It's actually a great story... the locusts were devouring everything, and the pioneers prayed for help, and the seagulls came and ate them all. That's why they have a Seagull monument in the middle of Salt Lake to this day.
The Mormon pioneers ended their migration at huge empty valley with very little fresh water and even less vegetation, inhabited by a handful of Native Americans. The valley is now called the Salt Lake Valley and is has a population of over 1 million.
