The simplest way to explain this is the colonists at Jamestown were not much different than people today, in their attitudes towards someone they perceive as weaker. The colonists at Jamestown were responsible for several attacks on local natives and called them to a "Peace meeting" where they then murdered all representatives sent, this combined with violating their word (treaties) were "Dishonorable acts." In most Native American cultures the perception of honor is the only thing that separates humans from non-humans (even animals have honor), these acts were the epitome of evil (demons).
The question said "Native Americans" who helped the settlers. The Puritans occupied Indian lands in what is now Massachusetts. Jamestown was down in the southeast - Chesapeake Bay. The Virginia Indians who interacted with those setllers were part of the Powhatan Confederacy, a group of local tribes. It was a complex relationship between English and natives. The Powhatans did help, at first, in terms of farming practices, fishing and other forms of survival but the English settlers were violent and greedy for land from the beginning, causing conflicts.

When the men landed to form the Jamestown colony they had problems with the native Americans in the area. They built a fort and within the first six months of the 107 who landed only 44 were still alive. This is due to a combination of disease and attacks by the local Native Americans. So, the interactions between the colonist and the Native Americans wasn't very good.
