The wind blowing the sails is what made the caravels (ships) sail. It balances with the pressure of the wind blowing onto the sail to push the ship across the ocean. Kinda like when you drag your dog if he/she doesn't want to walk. You dragging the dog is like you're the wind, the dog's the ship, and the leash to drag the dog with is the sail. You get it? :D?
He thought sailing the Atlantic ocean would bring him faster to India, and eventually make him famous for discovering a new route that leads to Asia. Remember Christopher Columbus set out to find India because they had good spices and good trading material. There was one major problem, the Atlantic led to the Americas not to India. When Christopher finally reached land he though he was in India, but he was actually in North America. Since he still thought he was in India Christopher called the natives Indians, thus creating a new word to call the Native Americans. Christopher Columbus would later eventually die still thinking that he found India.

Columbus decided to sail West in an attempt to get to India due to the sparse knowledge of the globe that existed at that time. They did not know of North America, South America or the Caribbean. Columbus believe that if he sailed West, he would eventually reach India. As many European countries were competing for the spices in the East Indies, his idea was accepted by the Spanish monarchs. While he was not wrong in a sense, he was unaware of the giant land mass in the middle.
