Douglass was a very important and influential person against slavery. He was an a part of the Abolition movement. He was born into slavery and was later freed.

Since he was one of very few African slaves that knew how to read and write, he wrote "The Autobiography of Frederick Douglass" it provided an accurate inside look into slavery that had rarely been published in the past. It becomes one of very few published works that can state authoritatively what slavery was like from the viewpoint of a former slave.

Frederick Douglass was a man of considerable intelligence, very able as a writer and as an extemporaneous speaker, who had been born a slave and escaped. By virtue of his clear intelligence, he was himself a clear counter-argument to claims that blacks were somehow intrinsically inferior people for whom slavery was appropriate.

In addition to arguing for the emancipation of blacks, Douglass was a relatively early advocate of granting women the right to vote.

Douglass was an open opponent of socialism, holding that men would not be free if they could not acquire property.

During America's Civil War, Douglass persuaded Lincoln to begin representing the war (which had primarily been a jurisdictional dispute) into an overt war against slavery, so that an end to slavery became a natural consequence of northern victory.

Douglass held that another generation would have to pass before both could be got, and that it was more important at that time to give the right to black men because of political and social conditions in the South.
