Because, until the Battle of the Coral Sea in May '42; navies had been fighting and sinking each other by gunfire & torpedoes...but at least it was all done by sailors!

Then came the carriers...and airmen began sinking ships (sailors). At Coral Sea not one warship got a chance to shoot at another warship. And that was a naval battle!
