The Romans enjoy the gladiator fights to
1. Honor their gods.
2. For the Olympics (Also to honor gods)
3. For the fun, they put slaves, and prisoners in, not real army men of the Roman Empire, they train the slaves or prisoner and make them fight. One of them, of course isn't going to be able to defend himself.
Rome had gladiators for the same reasons that we have football. It was their national "sport". The Romans, from their beginnings, had always been a people who appreciated the military. Generals were honored and a politician stood little chance of gaining political office if he had done no military service. The gladiatorial combats have been likened to mini wars by some writers. The victor, representing Rome, was rewarded and the loser, representing the conquered enemy, either perished or was disgraced.
The gladiators in ancient Rome were good for the same reasons that the Roman army was so good. They trained and trained and then trained more.

No, there does not seem to be any female gladiators that are even named, let alone be famous. Most women would use a "stage name" anyhow, as they certainly would not want their family name associated with the lowest form of entertainment. This, of course, is assumed that they were free women who entered the arena voluntarily. The British Museum has a marble of two female gladiators with their names inscribed in Greek as "Amazon" and "Achillia". They are obviously stage names but there is no record of how famous these women were.

Surviving gladiators could retire. The successful gladiators could make quite a lot of money. Gladiators were allowed to keep the prize money of the contests and famous gladiators received substantial donations from rich people and, sometimes, emperors. Successful gladiators were very popular and were treated like heroes. It is thought that some retired gladiators worked as teachers at the gladiatorial schools.
