Why are labor unions so important?

Labor unions were formed to protect the rights of the individual workers. Alone, one worker could not demand anything, because he coudl easily be fired and not hurt productivity too much to find a replacement. When they banded together they could affect change cause you can't fire them all and still produce a product (make money). So they had to make deals which included decent pay and working conditions. They are not as important anymore because of labor laws protecting the people (in Canada and the United States).

I do believe that unions are very important. I am a member of the Organization United for Respect at Walmart (OURWalmart for short). No we are not a union but we are fighting the same fight- for a better economy.

MY ANSWER IS: Unions are still important because we have employers that do not follow the laws that are in place now and unions are there to be your voice. Try to work a 40 hr week, take care of a family and talk to a corporate business about your demands in the work place. You would never see change. Thank goodness there are people that have stepped up to the plate to do this full time. In a perfect world when man could have morals and ethics and keep them/use them and not become so greedy. Then that will be the day unions are no longer important.
