The Separatist Pilgrims sought to hide their religious ceremonies primarily to avoid persecution from the Church of England, which enforced conformity to its practices. They believed in a more personal and direct relationship with God, which clashed with the established church's doctrines. By keeping their ceremonies secret, they aimed to practice their faith freely without drawing the attention of authorities who could arrest or punish them for their beliefs. This desire for religious freedom ultimately led them to seek a new life in America.

To have religious freedom. In England all people were made to follow the church of England. The pilgrims did not agree with the church of England's beliefs and therefore left for british unsettled land were they wouldn't be prosecuted. Originally the pilgrims were trying to land in Jamestown the already settled town in the new world but with flaws in navigation they ended up landing in Plymouth (New settlement named by the pilgrims). Nowadays Plymouth Massachusetts.
they weren't granted permission to get into Holland
The Pilgrims, who sailed on the Mayflower in 1620, intended to reach Virginia but were blown off course by storms and ended up in present-day Massachusetts. The Puritans, arriving later in the 1630s, had a more direct voyage to the Massachusetts Bay area and did not experience the same level of disruption from storms. Both groups sought religious freedom, but the Pilgrims' journey was notably marked by their detour due to weather.
The Pilgrims didn't settle in New England because they wanted to, but because they saw that it was land. They simply wanted to settle where there was no ruler and wanted to end their long journey. They were trying to get to Virginia but got lost.
