To have religious freedom. In England all people were made to follow the church of England. The pilgrims did not agree with the church of England's beliefs and therefore left for british unsettled land were they wouldn't be prosecuted. Originally the pilgrims were trying to land in Jamestown the already settled town in the new world but with flaws in navigation they ended up landing in Plymouth (New settlement named by the pilgrims). Nowadays Plymouth Massachusetts.
