The Spanish Steps in Rome were constructed between 1723 and 1725, taking about two years to complete. Designed by the architect Francesco de Sanctis, the project was commissioned to connect the Trinità dei Monti church at the top of the hill to the Spanish Square below. The steps feature a total of 135 steps and are a notable example of Roman Baroque architecture.
