Japan needed raw materials, particularly oil, in order to continue their aggressive war against China. The USA did its best to prevent the Japanese gaining these war materials, unless they gave up the war first.

Without the islands America and Japan would have a very hard time operating in the pacific. They served as places to place troops and resource vastly reducing the fleet that would be required to fight a war. Imagine if the US had to sail all of the resources it needed from the coast to the main land of japan. It would be near impossible
