Japan is a group of relatively small islands that is not rich in resources. Their military campaign was that one of expansion. They coveted the resource rich Mainland of China and the isles of the Pacific.

A hundred years before the war officially began they had invaded and conquered Korea, and were in the process of annexing it completely as a japanese province.

The japanese empire had justified it's actions as preparing the whole "Greater Asia Co-prosperity Sphere" (which is what they planned on naming their abomination of an empire) for an eventual european expansion. By "civilizing" the natives of the islands and extracting their resources, the japanese imperialists believed they would secure a resource base to keep their country prosperous and growing.
