Why did Martin Luther King Jr give his famous speech?

Martin Luther King gave the speech "I have a dream" to show all of the thousands of black people who were being racially abused and discriminated that there was hope.

Throughout his life, all he knew was a separation between blacks and whites. During college he decided it wasn't good enough, it wasn't right.

He gave this speech to show blacks that he had a dream, that the racial abuse and discrimination would be gone, and everyone could be equal. He believed that blacks and whites were equal and that there was a way of protesting civil rights without using violent measures. Throughout his speech he says:

• you can fight and protest without violence
• blacks and whites are equal
• the only difference is the colour of your skin.
