Mary Seacole was a nurse who was born in Kingston Jamaica, 1805. She was of mixed race (JAmaican adn Scottish) and went to help soldiers who were injured in the Crimean War. She was refused many jobs because of her race and made her own way to the sight of the war as nobody would take her.

She wrote an autobiography to help her stay out of financial difficulties as she faced bankrupsy.

In 1881 she died and was buried in London (Catholic cemetary) . She has a statue made of her as a memory of her work and strength.
