It was a rebellion against the government by the Planters, who were led by Bacon. The Planters did not like that the Virginia government would not stand up against the Native Americans but instead offered friendly politics. In 1674 a group of yeoman farmers on the Virginia frontier demanded that American Indians living on treaty protected lands be driven out or killed. When the government refused, Bacon and his small army drove Governor Berkeley from Jamestown, VA and they torched the capital. This was the first rebellion in the American colonies.
