Why did Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand fund Christopher Columbus?

Ferdinand and Isabel were eager to finance the expeditions of Columbus because the Catholics had just recently regained power in Spain. With centuries of war finally behind them, the Catholic monarchs wanted to expand the borders of their empire and establish their own trade routes across the Atlantic Ocean.

The most likely reason they funded his voyage was due to the pressure of other countries such as Portugal dominating the sea route around Africa to India and China. It had nothing to do with "discovering a new world" - at this point, they didn't know the Americas even existed. (They promised to reward him if he came across any islands, but nothing as large as North and South America.) Columbus came across Northern America by accident, reported that he had found a new route to the west, and died thinking that he had landed somewhere in the Indies.
