Toussaint Breda, more commonly known as Toussaint L'Ouverture, was born a slave to an African chief who had been enslaved and sent to Haiti. Breda learned of Africa from his father and more importantly learned that he was an intelligent black man. On top of this, he was also fortunate enough to have a liberal master, who allowed him to learn to read and write. Throughout his youth, he read many books about the Enlightenment, whose main minds behind this movement spoke of equality and freedom. Due to his upbringing of dignity and learning, he could not see why his fellow African Haitians could not also be free. After many years, Napoleon, starting to see economic troubles (which also resulted in the selling of the Louisiana Purchase) wanted to stop worrying about Haiti so agreed to terms of peace with Toussaint.
