Union Lt Gen John Bell Hood resigned in 1865 after ordering a frontal assault and losing miserably at The Battle of Franklin.
Confederate General Hood refused to accept blame for the Confederate loss at the Battle of Nashville, which decimated the Army of Tennessee. He was widely criticized by the South for the loss and after his resignation in January 13, 1865, he was never given another field command. His career was over.
On April 2, 1865 three Union divisions under the leadership of Major General James H. Wilson captured Selma, Alabama. Despite the efforts of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, the Union prevailed.

Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant as General of the Army accepted General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. Grant would later be elected president in 1868 and serve two terms.
Following the Union victory at the Second Battle of Fort Fisher, Adelbert Ames was promoted to major general in March of 1865 for his excellent performance in that battle.
On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, surrendered to Lieutenant-General Ulysses S. Grant, commander of the Union Army. This effectively led to the end of the Civil War.
All but 1 or 2 did that.

Lieutenant General Robert E. Lee gave General Gordon the task of mounting an assault on Fort Stedman in March of 1865. Gordon's assault was aimed at severing part of the Union lines in and around Petersburg. Union reserves counterattacked and the Rebel efforts were in vain.

North Carolina was invaded from the South by Union Army General William Tecumseh Sherman in February of 1865.
By the beginning of 1865 General Grant was interested in capturing Fort Fisher in North Carolina. This would give better support to General Sherman's invasion of the Carolinas. Admiral Porter was given the task to assault the fort.
