Germany was divided, after WWII, into two- East and West Germany. The East belonged to the USSR and the West belonged to the allies. Berlin (the capitol of Germany) was also divided. (Of course the West half goes to the allies and east to the USSR) But Berlin was located in the USSR's side of Germany.

Later the Soviet Union closed off the airports in their half of Berlin to try and get the allies to leave, so of course the allies' planes couldn't land there to defend West Berlin.
