John Cabot had some difficulties on his first voyage. He did not reach Asia as he had hoped because he ended up having to turn back due to bad weather, shortage of food, scurvy, and problems with the crew.
They are afraid to go far by sea because they are scared that maybe the go somewhere they don't know(nowhere) and they are afraid of the weather(hurricane, storm etc.) and disease(scurvy).
Scurvy can be healed by boiling cedar to make medicine. The Aboriginals taught Jaques Cartier how to heal scurvy. The aboriginals had limes that cured scurvy. After that sea captains knew how to cure scurvy and called limes: limeys. But now in this time we call them limes.
