Christianity is a very appealing religion, particularly by people who have no standing in society. Christianity stresses that death may not be the end, that the riches, powers, and glory of this world are unimportant (thus the appeal to the powerless), that God loves all people, and that love of other people is the key to salvation. Therefore, many Romans abandoned the Roman gods and converted to Christianity.

There is no real evidence that the Romans ever punished the early Christians for any kind of disaster. The preferred official reaction to the presence of Christians was that if the Christians were discreet about their refusal to worship the Roman gods, they could be ignored. A Christian tradition holds that, in the mid-first century, Nero persecuted the Christians living in Rome because he blamed them for the Great Fire, but historians have been unable to find any evidence of such persecution or even a reason for Nero to want to blame them unjustly. The Romans believed that by refusing to worship the gods, Christians were risking divine wrath. So, while there is no real evidence that this occurred, there may have been isolated instances of Christians being punished because their lack of faith in the Roman gods, (for which they were accused of being atheists) which supposedly brought disasters on the people.
There is no real evidence of the Romans persecuting Christians before at least 97 CE, and only sporadic periods of persecution even after that. A Christian tradition holds that Nero persecuted the Christians living in Rome because he blamed them for the Great Fire, but historians have been unable to find any evidence of such persecution or even a reason for Nero to want to blame them unjustly. If the story of the martyrdom of Stephen is based on fact, then that instance involved Jews, not Romans. When it occurred, persecution was usually because Christians refused to worship the gods, thereby risking divine wrath. Some Romans felt that the gods could be appeased by punishing Christians who overtly refused to worship them. Sometimes emperors supported one side or the other for political reasons. From the late fourth century onwards, Christianity had become the official religion of Rome and was in a position to persecute pagans and Mithraists. It seems that persecution does not choose its victims - whichever religion is more powerful at the time persecutes the less powerful.
We Came as Romans in not a Christian band. Some of their songs may have a Christian meaning, but that does not make them a Christian band. However, some of the band members are Christians, as others are not. The lead singer said on an interview that they do not want to be known as a Christian band because of the band members who are not Christian.
