During the French Indochina War (1946-1954); the US supported the French (with WWII M24 Chaffee light tanks, WWII Bearcat single engine fighter planes, steel helmets, rifles, machine guns, ammo, medical supplies, trucks, etc.). The communists supported the Viet Minh.
When the war ended in '54, the communists demanded the northern portions of Vietnam and the free world demanded the southern portion...as a compromise; otherwise they (the communists & free world) would fight all over again right then and there.
Korea had occurred at the same time: 1950-1953; the US/UN fought the Reds in that war, theres no reason they wouldn't do it again...especially with US troops still in South Korea (just up the road).
the north won and the south loss
The North were the communists. The South was the free republic (of South Vietnam).
South Vietnam's surrender to North Vietnam is what ended the Vietnam War. The North Vietnamese had the goal of Vietnamese Unification and the surrender of South Vietnam in 1975 allowed them to achieve that objective.
There is NO North Vietnam & South Vietnam today (and there hasn't been a north & south for over 30 years; when the north conquered the south, ending the war in 1975). Today's Communist Vietnam is President Triet.
North Vietnam and South Vietnam. South Vietnam was a democratic republic and North Vietnam had a socialist government headed by a communist regime. North Vietnam was trying to defeat the democracy of South Vietnam and unify the country.
North and South Vietnam were unified in 1976 to form the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after the end of the Vietnam War. The North Vietnamese Army captured Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, in 1975, leading to the unification of the country under communist rule.
the north won and the south loss
There IS no North and South Vietnam, only Vietnam. After the US withdrew combat forces from South Vietnam, North Vietnam violated the peace agreement, invaded and conquered South Vietnam. Game over.
North Vietnam WAS located north of the 17th parallel. South VN was south of it.
The North were the communists. The South was the free republic (of South Vietnam).
There no longer is a North Vietnam, North Vietnam and South Vietnam were joined together after the Vietnam War.
