During colonial times, belief in witches was fueled by a combination of religious fervor, fear of the unknown, and societal tensions. Many communities were deeply religious and viewed witchcraft as a manifestation of evil, often linked to the devil. Additionally, economic hardships, social strife, and personal grievances led to scapegoating, where individuals, often women, were accused of witchcraft to explain misfortunes. This environment created a fertile ground for witch hunts and trials, as fear and superstition took hold in the populace.
The 'heyday' of witch-hunting was from about 1550-1700. Witch-hunting had a particular attraction for Protestants - from Hungary to New England.
British people in the 17th century sometimes held the superstitious beliefs that someone could become possessed by the devil. They did not believe that these people were responsible for their actions. Those who made a pact with the devil however were considered to be evil and witches.
People back during the Salem Witch Trials became so paranoid that they thought anyone acting strangely were witches.

People still believe in witchcraft and witches. This has never gone away, but centuries ago people who had red hair were often seen as witches and people who were not part of a community but considered outsiders or odd were seen as witches. Witchcraft was often used to explain events in a community.
