According to a show on the History Channel, pioneers during westward expansion in America build sod houses using grass and mud because there was no timber or trees for wood. This would have been the case across the Great Plains and bread basket; Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. Sod was used until the railroad came through and was able to deliver wood for construction.
