Actually, they didn't just say "thunder/flash." They switched words all the time so that the enemy couldn't pick up on them. All of the words they used did have one thing in common though: all non-Americans couldn't say these words without an accent. And that was the point, really.

Sometimes they would just ask a question and American would know like for example, General Omar Bradley was accosted by a nervous sentry, who for a test question asked him "What is the capital of Illinois? General Bradley gave the correct answer, "Springfield". But the sentry thought it was "Chicago" and arrested him.
