Some U.S. leaders wanted to send troops to fight the Viet Cong to prevent the spread of communism in Southeast Asia, adhering to the "Domino Theory" that suggested if one country fell to communism, neighboring countries would follow. They believed military intervention was necessary to support the South Vietnamese government and to assure allies of America's commitment to containing communism. Additionally, there was a growing concern about the credibility of U.S. foreign policy and the potential impact on global perceptions of American power.
Believe it or not, the first troops into Vietnam were not conventional troops. They were actually the Green Berets, or the 10th Special Operations Forces. They were there to train the South Vietnamese to fight the Guerrilla Vietcong in South Vietnam. They first went in country in the 1950's.

The Vietcog set traps to wound or kill as many enemies (American troops) before actually haviing to fight them. They could not fight America's superior technology face to face. By setting traps the etnmies wounded, demoralized and seriousy freaked out American troops and made them less effective.
US troops retaliated with firepower. Just one NVA or VC popping off a few rounds at GIs could bring in artillery, naval artillery, helicopter gunships, and jet strikes. Not to mention tanks and ACAVs on the ground supporting the grunts.
They weren’t prepared for war because there were few troops and the leaders were too old to fight.
The significance of Vietnamization was that it allowed U.S. troops to withdraw without actually losing the Vietnam War by training the Southern Vietnamese to fight the Vietminh and Vietcong instead of the US troops.
